BACK TO BOGNOR

Finally managed to get the family camping this summer, a couple of nights near lovely Bognor.  I can recommend Ecclesden Farm in Angmering for a cheap, picturesque site.  It’s a working farm 10 minutes walk from an excellent pub (Spotted Cow) and 20 from a train connection with the rest of Sussex.  I reckon the walks just north of here near Petworth are some of the best in the country, but very quiet compared to those in East Sussex (Seven Sisters etc).

The area around Bognor has some really attractive village pubs, including the Gribble Inn in Oving, a brew pub though still with the Hall & Woodhouse livery.  I’m no great fan of homebrew, but the Gribble was superb, and the pub felt homely as well as slightly upmarket.

GRIBBLE

Chichester looked particularly attractive in the sunset, and although not a great tourist town, does contain some pretty streets around the Cathedral, which itself was unique in my recent experience in being scaffold free.  The town itself was eerily quiet on a Tuesday night, and seemingly takeaway-free.

The downside to this part of the world remains the stretch of A27 between Chichester and Arundel – 5 mile in 40 minutes.  Sort that out and I’ll come back next year.

  1. With friends in Bognor I’ve used the Gribble Inn but much more than five years ago, maybe while down that way for the Portsmouth AGM 1996 or Hove AGM 1999.
