GETTING BEST VALUE FROM YOUR SPOONS TEA

November 2026. Hillsborough. Sheffield.

One of the issues about flitting between a Sheffield home, a Sussex caravan and a Cambridge Travelodge is that we never quite have enough food in any of them, but always seem resigned to chucking away vegetables into a black bin we never quite get collected.

With a return to Waterbeach imminent, we spent this week eating leftovers (mostly old pasta, peppers and garlic), interspersed with a visit to the local Spoons.

Note the look of fierce determination on Mrs RM’s face as she surveys the meal deals. I did the math for her;

Order Guinness 0.0 as a soft drink option, then buy the Jaipur with CAMRA voucher for £2.05, total £7.04.

Do it the other way round, and it’s £6.52 (no token via app) plus £2.88 = £9.40. I shoulda been an accountant.

Mrs RM is a big fan of the jacket potato here, much cheaper than Spud U Like. I pick scampi and halloumi fries, and won’t apologise.

Mrs RM’s Jaipur is so VERY GOOD (cool, chewy) she gets another one, and we note what a happy place the old Hillsborough baths are.

Away from “high stool blokes at the bar”, most of the custom is couples and groups, far from the stereotype of the lone ****head.

We’re transfixed by the rotating Disaronno display (PRESS PLAY),

perhaps they’ll introduce a cask version of it and I’ll succumb.

  1. Titanic’s Amaretto-Infused Cherry Porter Grand Reserve is a thing of beauty, which I appear to have described on Untappd as “Fantastic. A lovely meld of roasty porter with sweetish cherries, then a subtle almondy aftertaste. Well done White Star Line owners.” I shall be treating myself to a 750ml bottle of that and the Port-Infused Plum Porter for Christmas.
