September 2026. Royal Tunbridge Wells.

Arriving late in Tunbridge Wells we’d booked a Travelodge rather than stay at the in-laws (do any children like sleeping in their parents’ house ?).

Sunday night brings £30 rooms at the old Wellington Hotel,

with free parking opposite and the decent Mount Edgecumbe pub overlooking the common. It looked particularly atmosphere the other winter. Will we ever have winter again ?

Until I did my own (rather half-hearted these days) cross-checking of the new Good Beer Guide I missed the new entry just over the East Sussex border.

Odd to think of Eridge Green as a posh suburb of Tunbridge Wells, but it really is.
Perhaps posh folk have Sunday lunch late, as the Nevill Crest & Gun was as busy as I’ve ever seen a pub round here, every seat under the beams taken up. Not a place you sit at the bar, mind.

Rather different pricing here to Sunday lunch in Corby Glen,

but I shan’t be criticising Brunning & Pricey, not when their pubs are full.
Or when their cask is as reliably GOOD (perhaps a little better) as the Harvey’s. The difficulty of finding decent Harvey’s is one of this blog’s 344 recurrent themes.

Unlike Bass, Harvey’s Sussex Best doesn’t seem to have improved since “influencers” started saying how good it is.

Will we ever have winter again? We’ve had nothing else all year in Shetland.

Give it another 50 years and you’ll have perpetual summer too, Bill. People complaining about the heat in Leeds yesterday.
