September 2026. Dewsbury.

It’s worth coming to Dewsbury just for the Refreshment Rooms, of course, but just as instructive to wander round a former mill town of 61,035 souls on a weekday,

wonder how long the artwork has been on display,

and see barely another soul in a town of commanding architecture. Halifax looked a bit like this 30 years ago, before regeneration/gentrification.

The Little Germany quarter of Bradford feels similar to Dewsbury,

but Bradford has rather more pubs, I only really noted the Black Bull now the JFK is no longer.

In fact, I’ve rarely been in a major town with fewer open pubs, cask or keg, and the lack of a Spoons is telling.

Just as well the Refreshment Rooms opens at 10am, but the best looking Pakistani breakfast cafe closes by 2pm, so I need to dash past the Minster,

and across the Calder to Desi Nashta.

It’s not on the Curryheute list, but this is the place to come for your breakfast curry.

Ignore the menu;

go straight for the slow-cooked Nehari with chappatis, a wonderfully tasty dish.
