UP THE HILL AND DOWN THE ALE

August 2026. Frome.

Pub 5 on the Frome Frolic, and having retrieved Kentish Paul from the chaos of the rail system it was time to do a rapid tour of the town,

and head for the GBG micro up the hill.

Oddly, we lost Stafford Paul at this stage, opting for a well earned breather rather than a squeeze into a micro that barely fitted our group.

Note the Cats & Dogs shop, behind, appropriate on a day when it seemed a tough job keeping our casketeers in order.

The mysterious John B, about whom I’m allowed to disclose nothing bar the fact he was a nice guy, reminds me via Untappd what beer I had.

Definitely one for fans of bare boards and butterflies,

and if you ever went to the original Just Ales in Wells you’ll know what to expect.

We then subjected Paul Bailey to another steep climb up gorgeous Caroline Street, perhaps the highlight of the day.

Or more likely, it was the next pub.

  1. So what can we find out about the mysterious John B, other than he’s a nice guy? Well he’s got a sloop named after him for a start. Hang on, he’s not John B Sparks out of Dr Feelgood is he?

  2. Or is he John B, the drum & bass DJ/producer from the late 90s/early 00s? Releases on Metalheadz, Prototype, Formation, etc.

Also, is that guy wearing a partially-obscured Velocity Girl t-shirt? Kudos if so.
