A PROPER BRATFUD CURRY IN SHIPLEY

June 2026. Shipley. West Yorkshire.

Well, I know two (2) readers who’ll want to see pictures of Bradford curry.

We called it a day at Gallows Bridge,

a memorable place from which to restart the Cask Camino,

and headed to the £29.99 Travelodge next to the Noble Comb.

You’ll be expecting that we’d then hit the town for some more pubs, but moderation in all things, even moderation. Mrs RM just fancied a curry.

I consulted CurryHeute.

There’s an Aagrah, the Brunning & Price of curry, that looks like a Dunelm,

but CurryHeute’s local advice (back in 2013 to be fair) was it’s the Rajpoot you want, just past the old bank.

Actually, you have to pass Shimla Spice first,

and on any other night that would have got the nod. But Shimla is BYO, and Rajpoot is alcohol-free,

in fact the jug of water arrived at the table before we’d sat down.

Poppadoms, pickle tray and excellent onion bhajis, very Old School.

This is what I think of when I think of unfussy and cheap* Bradford curry houses, closer to the Kashmir than the International, and a welcome break from Cyndi Lauper and Spandau Ballet in the soundtrack.

Mrs RM (above, left) always has the chicken dhansak; Mr RM (above, right) must always pick the first one on the Chefs Specialities list.

Curry Heute is the man for describing curry. My Desi Khana was basically a mountain of spicy meat, impressive but hard to finish**.

But (obviously) we perservered, and conquered.

*Two mains, pilau rice, chapattis, onion bhajis, poppadoms and pickles – exactly £30

**Another dish of raita would have helped.
