A GOURMET SAUSAGE ROLL IN SUDBURY’S WHITE HORSE

June 2026. Sudbury.

Now Sunnyside is sold I have to make other overnight arrangements when popping down to Cambridge, which seems to believe that £155 is a reasonable price for a night at a hotel.

Luckily there’s still a few places you can park your campervan without enraging the locals, and Sudbury in Greater Lavenham has the bonus of a new GBG pub to tick.

Regular readers will know that Mrs RM is ALWAYS RIGHT, and back in 2017 she’s really wanted to go in the White Horse,

and she was right to try to get me in there for a pre-emptive tick nine (9) years early.

It’s a plain but cosy Greene King diner, unfussy “blousey” food trade,

gloriously unexciting cask range,

and two displays of artisanal sausage rolls.

Well, how could I resist ? It would stop me having a Chinese takeaway in the campervan later, at least.

Despite the IPA in the worst glass apart from the Adnams (why always Southwold), it’s a pint that deserves its GBG debut, cool and rich (3.5),

but that warmed up meaty sausage roll was the true star (NSRSS 5).

No, actually, it was the barmaid. Enthusiastic about the food, checking on whether I’ve got the condiments and cutlery, a smile and an “Enjoy !” to warm the heart.

  1. Would you believe, I was in there when news spread about the Queen dying ??

My first thought , was, christ, I hope they don’t shut or go to Sunday hours.

Think there’s another pub up the road with a Royalist kinda name, King’s Arms or some such. Both did a roaring trade outta me for a few days….
