May 2026. Stockport.

All journeys lead to Stockport, or at least involve a change from Platform 1 to 3.
As you’ll know, the timetables for Cross Country and Northern Rail are curated so that a fit #PubMan can fit in a pint before the next train to Congleton for an ultra-rare GBG tick.

I arrive at 12:26, am forced to a slow pace behind the ditherers on the stairs, so only leave the Edgeley exit at 12:29, which means a dash to the Crown and back in 26 minutes maximum.

Google Maps suggest that’s technically possible, as long as you don’t actually go in the Crown, take a photo or two.

And certainly don’t dawdle over a pint of some of the best Bass in the country.

Blimey, I even chanced a look at the beer garden.

“You’d better dash !” says the charming young barman.
Never in doubt.
One of England’s iconic photos. Breathtaking view of a pub.

For half a second I thought you meant the sight of Martin running for the train to Congleton with a pint of Bass in his belly.
Yes, framing the pub in the arch of the viaduct is an irresistible shot.

Yes, I wondered that too, Will.

Matt was impressed I managed to get there, drink a pint, take photos, and make it back in under half an hour ! More leisurely next time.

Interesting I never beat Google Maps but often cite you as an example of someone who always does 👍.

Slow people should take lifts wherever possible where busy stairs are involved! Envisioning the Mr Bean behind slow old lady scene now.
