DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE

May 2026. Sibiu. Romania.

The Untappd check-in map tells a tale of a well-pubbed town.

Some doubts I’d been having about the strength of the Romanian economy (Sighisoara and Alba Iulia were very quiet by dusk) were removed that first evening in Sibiu, as hundreds of families and gentlefolk descended on the central square to kick balls, dance to europop, and scoff ice cream.

We headed for the first bar with an outside terrace underneath the eyes,

though the interior of the Rabbit Hole (& Soup) looked more interesting.

and had one of the very few menus on our trip that wasn’t immediately understandable, always a bonus.

But we stuck to the beer (probably just as well, the reviews are incredibly mixed),

a couple of excellent microbrewery Blondes and Wheat beers from Beraria Artizanala and Nembeer, spoilt only by the glasses.

Blackpool Jane had beat us to this bar by a mere 8 years, so we toasted her.

No, we didn’t get aerial ballet.

We did get a cute little plastic bar code thingy which allows you to peruse the menu and then “call the waiter” to place the order.

Summoning the waiter to actually pay proved rather more difficult.
