April 2026. Norden. Greater Manchester.

Look at those contour lines !
An underrated place, Greater Rochdale, with micros in the town and hills all around. And top blogger (and bloke) Tandleman and the lovely E close by.
But what does Norden, 2 miles out of town on the road to Ramsbottom, have to attract the visitor ?

Well, a pint in the Cap & Whippet, and tapas next door in the Hop & Vine, as starters.
A quick look at Google reveals businesses called “Fix My Washer“, “Charliequinns Doggie Den” and competing businesses “Dance for Fun” AND “Dance like a Mother“. That’s “Mother” not “Mutha” by the way.

St Paul’s Church is solid,

the streets are well-kempt,

and your bakery needs are well met.

Great fontage here, but sadly closed.

Ah, the Northern stereotype.

I’m easily pleased, but needed something unhealthy to top it off.

Sadly, The Bridge could only offer a slice of homemade cheese pie with a scoop of chips, which as part of a calorie-controlled diet is positively healthy.

Two happier, chattier, folk than the lad (the cheese pie cook) and lass in the Bridge you will never meet.
Would love it if the Racing Pigeon Club had “Whip It” on the jukebox.

I like a cheese pie, me.
Reminds me of an occasion in Port Erin, Isle of Man. I was peckish so dropped into the Co-op for a convenient takeaway snack. Ooh, a cheese & onion pasty, that’ll do. Take it to counter.
Me: Just that please.
Assistant: Two for the price of one on that today!
Me: I only want one thanks.
Assistant: but you get one free.
Me: Yeah, but I only want the one.
Assistant: You could have the other one later.
Me: Where am I going to put it? I’ve only got my trousers pocket, it’ll get mangled in there.
Assistant: but you can get one for nowt.
Me: OK, OK…(goes and gets another one) there we go.
Assistant: 49p please.
Me: (Picks up one and leaves the other) Thanks.
Assistant: You’ve forgotten one.
Me: No, that’s yours. My gift to you. (Leaves hurriedly)
