Some folk told me it was too far to walk out to the Elms from central Burton; lads, it took 16 minutes to get back to Coopers,

admiring the ducks,

and the bridge over the Trent.

Just time to catch up with the hipster vinyl chart at the record shop,

and be unwisely diverted under the arches to a new micro tap, a GBG 27 cert ?

Just look for the gold car. Running a micropub is a lucrative business.

Outwoods occupies what looks like a Nissan hut, but compensates with a great welcome, bustling pubby feel, and a superb cask IPA (NBSS 4).
A must for when you have 8 minutes before your train and 3 pints of Bass isn’t quite enough.

On the Cross Country service home 3 lads heading back from Cheltenham Races picked over the bones of their losses. Gold Cup, Namibian Premier League, Polish 4th Division…
I need to return to Burton to walk that bridge I did not know existed. Never saw a golden car before either. Too much excitement in one Staffordshire town.

I have an alarming Burton story, Lana. A cheap guest house landlady brushing her teeth in the kitchen sink, making microwave eggs and finding socks in the bed. The Queens was better!

Nooooooo! I have in mind several travel glitch stories to share on my blog, now you have just made me think of another which took place in a Glastonbury B&B.

Ha ! If you’d asked me to guess another town with similarly poor B&B then Glastonbury would have been in there !

At any one time, somewhere in the world, there’s an album chart that has Rumours still in it.

Rumours is number eighteen (18) on THIS weeks album chart and unlikely to ever leave the Top 100 again.

Hi Martin, have you recorded any memorable occurrences of drinking Bass in London? Had a recent couple of pints at the end of an E4 ticking exercise in the Royal Oak and I thought it was superb there. All the best, David Walton

Hi David.
E4 ? Blimey. Nothing in Chingford, but the Flowerpot in E11 Wood Lane used to be legendary (though rarely any good!).
Of late it’s been Brentford’s Express Tavern, though I believe Bass has been spotted recently.
Is E4 your locale ?

Are those measuring the stores sales or a wider market?

I would have assumed it’s vinyl sales in that shop, but who knows these days !

Hi Martin, no SE1 (London Bridge / Bermondsey) my locality in London so Hand & Marigold, Blue Maid and Simon the Tanner my most local really decent pubs! First named won CAMRA’s SE London pub of the year for 2025 and same ownership as the Trafalgar in SW London. Completed my ticking of the E4 venues on Pubs Galore on Monday and the Royal Oak hands down the best in that London postcode area IMHO, albeit the GBG25 has two reasonable entries in the Stag & Lantern and the King’s Head!
All the best, David
