January 2026. Widnes.
A really good turnout for Mudgie’s send off, with loads of friends from Stockport CAMRA. Good to catch up with Tandleman from over the border, too.

With some lovely poems from Peter’s next of kin Pam this was a poignant service.
I offered to direct Cheadle Charlotte to the Rugby Union Club for the wake,

and to her immense credit she remained calm as after 15 minutes it was apparent we should have been at the Rugby League club instead.

It was great to chat to the Charlottes and Jims and Jans and Julies and John’s of Stockport CAMRA, a lovely crowd who seemed to understand Mudgie well.
Peter would have enjoyed the copious (mild) chicken curry and cream cakes, I think.

We will miss him very much.
That’s a lovely summary Martin.
I was as confused as anyone and think, rather than either Widnes Rugby Club, we went to the Halton Hornets Amateur RL Club – but I’m not sure.

Charlotte from Stockport branch and I were both confused, but it all worked out well in the end.

Not as confused as I who has never known the difference between League and Union.

League – lager drinking northerners, mostly along the M62
Union – lager drinking southerners (and Leicester)

Thank you Martin. Nothing to do with the shape of the balls then.

Yes, the wake was at Halton Hornets RL. The curry was good, the cream cakes were just fab!
I was part of the Stockport CAMRA group, and I’d known Peter since 1988. FFS, 1988!

1988 ! Blimey, sorry I wasn’t on your table to chat, Paul. But Julie, Jan, Jim and Charlotte were lovely company, always the best of people in Stockport branch. You did Peter proud with that turnout.

Glad it went well.

That captures the moment nicely.

(slow golf clap)
Mind you, I had no idea there’s both a Rugby League and a Rugby Union! 😏
“a lovely crowd who seemed to understand Mudgie well.”
He was more famous than he realised.
“We will miss him very much.”
Indeed.
Cheers 🍻
