ST. PETERS TAVERN, LIVERPOOL. NBSS 3.5 FOR THE BEER, NPPSS 5 FOR THE PORK PIE

January 2025. Liverpool.

Ten minutes after leaving the Red Cat I was standing next to Sir Ken.

Nothing brings happiness (geddit ?) like being in a great pub city with a £24.99 Travelodge booked and a Chinese takeaway recommendation from ChatGPT.

A tough choice; revisit the great museums and art galleries behind St Georges Hall,

or get the two new central Guide pubs ticked. Well, the Walker and the World Museum will always be there, but GBG entries wax and wane.

And the stroll through the heart of Liverpool’s nightlife quarter below Central Station is one of the UK’s great urban walks,

to the extraordinary St Peters Tavern.

If only there was a photographer with the ability to capture the magnificence of this conversion (has BRAPA been yet ?),

I’ll just have to drag Mrs RM there. She doesn’t have a problem with that glare in her photos.

The only problem St Peters has had is with being too popular, a slew of low scores for slow service. Not today though, trade ticking over on Thursday afternoon.

Lovely service, in fact, and a warm snack cabinet giving up the pork pie of your dreams.

I may have to start a new blog for warm pork pies; this was a marvel of crumbly chewiness.

The Fierce/Vocation collaboration edged up from a 3 to a chewy 3.5,

and the soundtrack, for the second time in an hour, was a marvel.

Two new classics already. Honestly, what is going on in Liverpool ?

    1. At The Monro on Duke Street L1 5AG there are 15 hand pumps, with one cider and 14 beers on when I was there last Tuesday. I didn’t sample them all – I’d already had plenty by the time I got there – so I can’t say whether quality was affected.

      1. Will, I was there early last year, much more sensible at my age than traipsing round dozens of North British mountains. The Bass was drinking well, and with change out of £4.

While I understand your enthusiasm, I can think of a few things that would bring greater happiness; but, I shan’t note them here.

“Well, the Walker and the World Museum will always be there, but GBG entries wax and wane.”

    Absolutely! Good point!

“And the stroll through the heart of Liverpool’s nightlife quarter below Central Station is one of the UK’s great urban walks,”

    It’s certainly, interesting.

“to the extraordinary St Peters Tavern.”

I have that on a Guinness glass!
(back when I was a big fan)

“If only there was a photographer with the ability to capture the magnificence of this conversion (has BRAPA been yet ?),”

He’d blame a bad photo on his wonky knee or some such.

“I’ll just have to drag Mrs RM there. She doesn’t have a problem with that glare in her photos.”

    Get a new phone!
(says the gent who’s phone is starting to inform him that he can’t download certain apps)

Blimey! I’m guessing the slow service is from trying to figure out which pump to pump!

“Lovely service, in fact, and a warm snack cabinet giving up the pork pie of your dreams.”

I have yet to have that dream.

“I may have to start a new blog for warm pork pies; this was a marvel of crumbly chewiness.”

    It’ll never catch on. 😉

    A disturbance in the Force?

      1. You sir, have a dirty mind! 😎

I meant a nice pint of beer, or maybe a small liqueur at bedtime.

        But yes, sex plays its part here, mainly in the long, cold, dark winters. I can prove this empirically;

        – my dear old Mom lived near Toronto, Ontario (latitude 49 deg N), and had three children

        – my wife’s dear old Mom lived in Whitehorse, Yukon (latitude 60 deg N) and had twelve children

The longer and darker the winter, the fewer ways to entertain oneself in the evenings. 😉

        Cheers

  2. Two-tone was marvellous. It could do with a revival right now.

It’s a pity, that the BBC and others endlessly promoted meaningless pap from smoothly-coiffured young men in shiny suits over it, but we know why they did.

    1. Knotty Ash itself is one of the dullest suburbs I’ve ever visited, though I’m sure you’d find something to report on, Lana. I did see Ken on the next table to us in a pub in the next village (Roby) 20 years ago, and was starstruck.
