December 2025. Sheffield.

Back in Sheffield I suddenly found myself unable to walk past the Wellington before the steep 10 minute walk home. Must be my gammy leg etc etc.

2 years ago I named the Welly my favourite pub in Sheffield, then promptly stopped visiting it. It’s like the Manager of the Month curse.
First time here since last January, and an almost identical experience, the £6 “meal deal”.

Bar the blokes drinking halves of Leffe.
I wouldn’t have had the Wellington down as a Leffe stronghold, but then again I’ve seen women drink a whole bottle of wine in there, and it wasn’t Mrs RM.
The one “must have” is that one quid cheese and onion cob. I match it with a packet of Pipers cheese and onion crisps, inferior matching has been known.

A foamy pint of Neepsend Pluto, scored 3.75 on Untappd so I guess 3.5 on CAMRA.
A few stronger beers in 2026 would be nice, but I’d only regret it the next morning.
When having a breadcake cake in The Bottom Wellie don’t forget to remember Tina, how does she do it? PS potted dog n onion is the only choice worth 2 Michelin stars in my book

Are breadcake cakes made by the makers of J-Cloth cloths?

And do you buy them with money from the ATM machine?

If you can remember your PIN number, yes, Bill.

That’s a meal fit for a king. The apex of the food world. The flavor of crisps elevates the meal to the top tier.

I’m glad you recognise a masterclass in sandwich preparation when you see it, Dave. Would Americans eat a sandwich like that ?

I run into a lot of people who don’t like onions. The cob also doesn’t have any meat which with our new food guidelines makes it unlikely this one would be sold here.

Ha ! Onions only served fried on hot dogs ?

Well Dave, not two hours ago in the Royal Oak at Church Eaton and ordering a cob for my wife I said she would like more onion than cheese but it still came with enough cheese for her to take half of it home.
I had a hot pork and stuffing cob that managed to equal those in the Great Western albeit at a pound dearer. It was appropriately accompanied by two pints of Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby Mild at a very reasonable £4.70 a pint and that in a pub that also always has Bathams Best Bitter on.
So the best of the Black Country is helping a community owned pub in a small Staffordshire village to do well.
All Church Eaton needs now is the reinstatement of a bus service.

The Wellington is now the top pub in Sheffield for beer quality, since Quinno scored a beer in the Kelham Island Tavern 1.5 on Pubs Galore last week. My score of NBSS 5 for a Neepsend beer in the Wellington in November makes it one of only 10 pubs in the whole country to have achieved a 5 in 2025, apparently.

Quinno is such a wag.

I mean, I’m not saying he’s wrong (on our Loughborough trip last year he scored higher than I did). I’m just surprised. You visit the KIT far more frequently than I do.
He may be spot on about the Fat Cat, though.

He does this thing where he goes into a pub with high beer scores and looks for whichever beer he thinks might have the lowest throughput. In this case a dark mild from Blue Bee. I’ve drunk it myself in the past and it was ok, but on this occasion Quinno just got unlucky. Or lucky, depending on your point of view.

That’s impressive petal garnish. And a juniper berry, I reckon.
