OYSTER BEDS

December 2025. Folkestone.

Leaving the Old Neptune, and the glorious sunset Mrs RM had just missed,

we headed over seashells and pebbles towards Whitstable’s oyster beds.

I’ll eat (and drink) anything, but I doubt oysters could match those we had in Lisbon last year.

You wondered where Bob the Builder got his dress sense from.

It must be nice to have a Proper Job like collecting oysters, or delivering post, rather than being an influencer or beer blogger.

Just then, Mrs RM saw the Pearson’s Arms.

I saw those loos on the left first. Spotless they were.

Pearson’s has had a spell in the GBG, but more likely to grace Foden’s or the Times Supplement these days.

No food the night we’re there, which means a different crowd, very cosy and unfussy.

One hand pump (is plenty); a decent if “lacking turnover” IPA from Dorking (why ?) that was vigorously pulled through first, so that’s good. You can, though, can see what sells here.

If, as Kojak famously sang, “A Picture Paints A Thousand Words”, then this shot,

and a soundtrack of Nick Cave and Jeff Buckley will tell you all you need to know about Pearson’s.

So, basically, over dead oysters to where the live oysters are.

“It must be nice to have a Proper Job like collecting oysters, or delivering post, rather than being an influencer or beer blogger.”

But think of the prestige! The accolades!

I see neither, heraldry, weapons, or those limby bits that hang down from your shoulders (unless you’re a Thalidomide baby).***

Meaning Si hadn’t been there as his sixth tick of the day.

Blimey. Bangers and mash the (almost) most expensive item? We have oyster bars over here (restaurants to eat them, not a place to hang out before they go to their beds). Thankfully, due to price, they’re mostly over in Vancouver. Mind you, the folks I know that went to them were more interested in what they washed the oysters down with. 😎😉
(plus, they were all on expense accounts)

    At least it wasn’t G-zero.

Blimey. The one on the left looks like she just came back from a tour of India and the one on the right looks like she just came of Safari.

    Cheers

Yes, and better than “nice” with a deep rural duty for ten years, just very unfortunate that the promised reduction from five to three days a week didn’t happen, my knees failed and I had to retire 8½ years ago.

    1. What a shame when you had a nice job you could have continued on in until you decided not to. I worked with an ex postie at Aston Uni a few years back. He hurt his back and had to give it up and was sad about it now, having to be desk bound.

  3. I thought that the Pearson’s was more of a restaurant. We ate upstairs, and if I remember rightly drinks downstairs were a bit pricey.

The place is at the other end of the spectrum, from what used to be the Prince Albert a few paces away whatever. (That’s something else now.)

I hope that the revelations about Southern Water haven’t injured Whitstable’s oyster reputation too badly.

      1. Well, Mrs E and I didn’t go in on account of the aggressive shouting and swearing emanating from it.

But hey, why judge a book by its cover? Some people like the ambience of a fight on a scaffolding rig.

  4. The Pearson looks very cosy and it is always good to know there are excellent public toilets, a rare find these days. Funny you mentioned postmen. I was just thinking today … will they cease to exist and we all have to collect our stuff from some sterile place with punch in codes.
