September 2025. Atherstone.
Just like Oasis, our revival of August’s massively successful Atherstone crawl was a re-run of the big hits, just with better-looking participants.
We start off at the canal pub, where the King’s Head is again solid but unexciting,
but the Landlord is a good chewy pint (NBSS 3+).
The walk along the canal is one of the highlights in a town where the pubs are densely congregated,
and leads us to my own Pub of the Day in Maid of the Mill.
Pub Curmudgeon mentioned the pubs were better than the beer, and you aren’t coming to Atherstone for Untappd check-ins,
but I enjoyed the Maid of the Mill as much as any pub all year.
Free entertainment from a dog standing on hind legs for a sip of Old Speckled Hen (NBSS 3),
the joy of a chatty pub with 86 year old Bass drinking regular (in every sense I suspect) at the bar,
and decent Bass (3) in those flashy new glasses with 🔺at the bottom.
It’s not posh, but it’s cosy, and chatty, and I suspect it won’t be the last visit I make.
Right, Mrs RM is hungry…

Yes, I mentioned the Maid of the Mill as one of the places where I’d be happy to linger. Nothing special, just unassuming and reassuring.

Hmm. By my way of thinking, when a band plays, they are the participants. Ergo, I’m assuming you mean the pub(s) staff were better looking this time?

No canals where I live, but we do have a river and an ocean to make up for it.

I am all tapped out when it comes to Untappd. Haven’t checked in there in eons.

I’ve remembered now from a visit eighteen months ago that I think the 86 year old Bass drinking regular was born in the Old Swan.
