P.E.D.estrian at best

September 2025. Sheffield.

A nice view from our bedroom window, carefully homing in on our neighbours garden rather than ours, which is in a “natural” state.

A better view 20 seconds up the hill, where Mrs RM made an overdue return to our beloved Blind Monkey after a summer neglecting our local.

It looks as good as ever, inside and out,

and we sort of have a regular table in the left hand corner, behind two chaps talking tennis.

I had never before heard anyone discussing Djokovic and Sinner in a pub, even in Wimbledon. They were drinking Hofmeister and Salt though, which says a lot.

The Blind Monkey has joined the Half Pint Marathon trail. I’d tried the official True North beer a few times already,

and judged it “PEDestrian at best”. Cue Courtney;

A half pint of an undistinctive 3.4% pale isn’t a great advert for cask (see : Untappd ratings), but you’re free to have Nightjar or Triple Point and stick 25p in the Sheffield Mind jar.

And the pizza is anything but pedestrian (why does Mrs RM always order the veggie one and then nick my peperoni ?).

This Half Pint Marathon seems to have got a few folk out of the house in the quiet start to Autumn, before Winter Autumn arrives, and if that allows pubs to stay open a bit longer before the freshers arrive, it’s something to celebrate.

      1. …and those who shout “WITH NO CHIPS” so the whole room can hear, and then, predictably…

Why didn’t they just give theirs to their companion?

Because it was all about shouting “WITH NO CHIPS” so that the whole room could hear, perhaps.

  1. “carefully homing in on our neighbours garden rather than ours, which is in a “natural” state”

In agreement here. I keep telling my beloved that our backyard is an English country garden. No one looks after all the green bits in the fields or woods so why should we?
(but she still does anyway, without help from me, as it counts towards her ‘burning calories’ bit)

“where Mrs RM made an overdue return to our beloved Blind Monkey after a summer neglecting our local”

I will admit I am a tad bit jealous (maybe a tad more than a tad?).

“It looks as good as ever, inside and out,:

Ok, definitely more than a tad.

“They were drinking Hofmeister and Salt though, which says a lot.”

I’ll admit we need more salt in our diet, but that’s taking it a bit far.

“I’d tried the official True North beer a few times already,”

Ok, I looked up their website and couldn’t a listing of ANY beer on it!

Also… True North? Look, I get you lot were a going concern before we were over on this side of the pond but we do the real TRUE NORTH bigger and bolder. 🙂

“and judged it “PEDestrian at best”.”

(gets up to to consider his reply – also my darling wife was making Asian style small cabbage rolls and talking to me at the same time so I lost my train of thought)

That was AWFUL. (but right up my alley – lol)

    “(see : Untappd ratings),.”

Ha! Thanks for the tip. I can check their beers on Untappd.

I looked up P.E.D. but it doesn’t explain what P.E.D. means.

Also, I didn’t see a post from you having one at the Blind Monkey; but it looks like you posted on 15 Sep from the Itchy Pig.

“(why does Mrs RM always order the veggie one and then nick my peperoni ?).”

It’s her way of showing she cares about you?

“This Half Pint Marathon seems to have got a few folk out of the house in the quiet start to Autumn, before Winter Autumn arrives, and if that allows pubs to stay open a bit longer before the freshers arrive, it’s something to celebrate.”

    Absolutely!

    Cheers

      1. Aha! Got it!

It took a bit of sleuthing (some Google/DuckDuckGo searches were bloody useless).

Finally, the AI built into the Brave browser (LEO AI) game me this:

“True North Brew Co.’s special marathon beer, P.E.D., stands for “Pint Every Day”.
It is a limited-edition beer brewed as part of the Sheffield Half Pint Marathon, a month-long celebration of independent pubs and charity support.”

        Huzzah! 😎

    1. I didn’t post on my earlier solo trip to the Blind Monkey a couple of days earlier, Russ, well spotted. As a rule I write up every pub visit as a separate post as my brain works like that and I can then delete photos and notes and so on, but it didn’t quite justify two posts in quick succession. I’ve actually been to that Kapital place three times this month, for a reason that will be revealed soon.
