MARCHING ON TOGETHER. RM AND LEON DO SHERBURN IN ELMET

August 2025. Sherburn-in-Elmet.

A prime example of the distractions I face having completed the GBG; this Monday Meander round Milford was the sort of pubbing for fun you don’t get when on a ticking mission.

South Milford (is there a North ?) Leon, Wetherspoons completist and Park Run ticker, had invited me to join him in lesser celebrated North Yorkshire to see what there was to celebrate.

But first, I had to get there. One train there, one train back, via a deathly quiet Rotherham to get the price below a tenner.

Rotherham, top GBG25 Pub Town

So few people get off at Sherburn that the “revenue protection officer” was convinced I was trying to get to York by a devious route,

and in truth ChatGPT hardly inspired me;

But Leon was there at the platform (failing to buy a 20p platform ticket, no doubt), ready to point out tourist attractions like “fallen pears”,

the John Smiths Smooth stronghold that is the Wheatsheaf, and the Chinese takeaway.

Actually, he had no idea about the takeaway scene, he was pub-bound.

A mile’s walk (14 mins) from home, the Swan isn’t a pub Leon visits every night, and like the rest of the Kingdom of Elmet it’s not a GBG pick,

but it’s cosy, relatively busy, and surprises us with two pumps.

It’s a cheery place, a shrine to L***s United

and Hi-Vis (not the band).

And, as so often with Craft Union, the cask is cool and crisp. Enough.

Oh, and £3 a pint. Who needs Sam Smiths ?

Well, we’ll find THAT out shortly.

    1. Have you any recommendations for nice pubs for food nearby, Leon? My mother in law lives up the road in Stillingfleet, and her go-to is dull Naburn Locks, but I’d appreciate a pubby alternative.

      1. Ash Tree Barkston Ash is pretty good, and maybe Blacksmiths Arms in Biggin but a while since I’ve been there. In the other direction Skipwith Arms isn’t bad. Enjoy!
