“What’s new and exciting in Sheffield, then ?”

July 2025. Sheffield.

The three (3) questions I’m most likely to hear these days are 1) When are you going to sort out that garden ?, 2) Are you sure you’re at the right gig, old fella ? and 3) What’s new in That Sheffield ?

Sometimes that last question means “What’s in the next GBG, then ?“, and I can only guess (Lescar, S6 Beer House and Alder are three that could be).

But “new” ? Not so much; unless you count BOX sports bar, but you don’t.

July brought our own “European beer hall” in the flash new part of town dominated by Europe’s biggest purpose built food court.

And Kapital were giving away pints of tank Budvar to tempt us in,

alongside techno DJs.

I guess even a decade ago the guest list would have looked “exciting”,

but in 2025 do Deya, Vault City and De la Senne look a bit Old Skool ?

Anyway, I’m here for the free lager,

a cool, good looking pint that would see most CAMRA members asking for a top-up, but the helpful note on the wall explains that this is all fine.

And I appreciate the freebie, particularly in this heatwave, but to be honest it tastes like the Tennents in Glasgow the other week.

It’s a classy place, the sort Mrs RM likes, and if I can persuade her to share the house dish I’d pop back.

But that seating isn’t likely to tempt the Old Codgers away from the Brown Bear…

      1. Oh no -the Dev Cat was my lads local when he started at Sheffield -delivered him & his goods & chattels to accommodation, had a final drink which he downed rapidly & left us sitting there to go & meet his new friends.I was a blubbering mess -my little boy had gone.

      2. I forgot your lad went to Sheff. Ours went to the Endcliffe residences in 2017 and neither of us seemed that emotional. We took him in the Dev Cat too, great food.

      3. Almost makes me want to return, until I looked at their music offerings. An indie bar, playing reggae?! I still picture it with the bar in the far corner, rather than the middle.

      4. It was called Indie go for a couple of years. I never went in. Oddly it’s a neglected Sheffield street these day, though it’s close to Pound Park and the new Cambridge Street development.

  1. Well that’s me done. Now officially #RetiredBill. Can’t celebrate though. On dryers due to tablets following nasty infection. Getting my beer/pub kicks vicariously via yourself and BRAPA.

I drank muddy water made from subsoil. It worked a treat but the medics can’t prescribe it because it might kill you.
      Ain’t life a hoot?
      Very best, M
