PAULL WITH TWO “L”s

July 2025. Paull. East Yorkshire.

I’m enjoying the new WordPress features showing which cities my blog views come from (the non-bot ones, anyway). Some of these places are plain made up;

I do feel an obligation to visit any place I’ve not been to, especially if Blackpool Jane has beat me to it.

Who or what is Paull ?

I know there’s a giant fort overlooking the Humber, but what else does a village of 723 strung out along a colourful High Street offer the curious tourist who’s had enough of East Hull ?

A lighthouse awaiting conversion to a micro, a frankly worrying window display,

a giant rat,

and a sense of foreboding that everyone is in the two remaining pubs.

Jane had tried the Humber Tavern,

a bustling place packed with Hull KR fans watching their team lose to L***s. But not that L***s, the Rugby League one. I’ve still never been to a Rugby League match, and the fixture schedule is harder to work out than the Premier League. Do Castleford ever play at home on Saturday.

A bit Old School, hunting prints on the hamd pumps, good Sunday lunch trade, a Guvnor who takes care of his cask,

a Northern head on a decent pint of the Great Newsome. Odds on this’ll be in the GBG before BRAPA dies.

A Proper Pub in Paull.

Not sure I approve of those beanie hats, mind.

  1. I went to a couple of Challenge Cup finals with my father in law when they were being held in the Millennium Stadium during Wembley rebuild (diplomatically finding an excuse to be in the concourse when GSTQ was played). The were enjoyable games and it’s nice that fans of all clubs turn up.

    I fancy visiting Castleford’s ramshackle ground (the Jungle), and Bradford’s Odsal, but can never line up the fixtures with family visits to the lost Welsh kingdom of Elfed (Elmet).
