THE DOUBLET, GLASGOW. A SYMPHONY IN BROWN

July 2025. Glasgow.

One night in Glasgow, and a fourth and final West End newbie to restore my faith in Scottish GBG entries.

It’s all about Kelvin now.

Down into Kelvinhall station,

under the river Kelvin,

and up at Kelvinbridge where the Doublet awaits. I never did get to Kelvingrove Art Gallery,

but the Doublet is a work of art, starting with that fontage,

and poetry in the window.

It’s a 4pm opener, with a major music draw, so perhaps not surprising it’s quiet late afternoon.

Duncan and Brian can take the gorgeousness of the Glasgow pub stock for granted,

just as I can take Kelham Island for granted if I’m not careful.

No, you sit outside in the sun, I’ll have that bench seat, thanks.

Quite unusual to be in a Scottish pub without Tim Taylor’s flagship on the bar,

so congrats to Broughton for being a survivor, the Oakham of the North ?

The 70/ an NBSS 3, the Doublet rather better.

Worth a fiver just to admire the fittings.

You can see why BRAPA prefers to go solo. It’s impossible to take notes when chatting to fellow #PubMen. That’s why I’ll drop Simon at the pub door and go for a walk for 27.5 minutes.

Anyway, thanks for your company, Brian and Duncan, but it’s time to go Southside.

  1. A few years ago I slipped away from a very dull conference drinks reception at the Kelvingrove Gallery and walked through the park in pelting rain to The Doublet, which was showing on my GBG app as the nearest pub. It was rammed on a Tuesday evening and had a far more convivial atmosphere; I could only stay for a couple but I’ve wanted to return ever since.
