A bod IN LICHFIELD

June 2025. Lichfield.

Unable to rest a single day in Sheffield I drove Mrs RM down to Lichfield, pausing at the National Memorial Arboretum

one of Dad’s last big adventures with me before dementia.

That day I took Dad to a trad pub for faggots and veg in Barton. Mrs RM gets the rather more modern bod in Streethay aka new build Lichfield.

You’ve got to admire Titanic for building a chain of smart cafe bars to sell their cask from 9am

this one has mums and dads and babies and community police officers, all welcome in the loos.

There’s not a lot to say. You could believe you were in somewhere exotic like bod Stafford, but Mrs RM rates her Plum Porter so highly she wants a second, and it’s my duty to deny her.

£5 your bod sausage rolls,

we settle on Shakshuka, remarkably filling for a tenner, and I resent my role as DES.

  1. “to sell their cask from 9am” and from 8am for thirsty travellers on Stoke Railway Station.
Have you been to Titanic’s proper Beacon pub in proper Lichfield yet ?
If not, maybe wait for Black Country Ales to reopen the Bitter Suite,.
I’ve never been to that arboretum but as a child went to the Illuminations at Walsall Arboretum.

  2. “Unable to rest a single day in Sheffield.” Surely your house and adopted city can’t be that bad, or is the wanderlust you appear to be suffering from, all consuming? (Asking for a friend.)

    1. You think I’m bad, Paul, Mrs RM got back from Cambridge to Sheffield at 3pm yesterday. She got on a coach to France that same day. I was camping in Darlington.

No, a day at home is a day of your life wasted. I’d be happy to be visiting that Cardinal’s Error though.

  3. Thanks for your prompt reply, Martin. I agree to a point, although unless you view your house as nothing more than a base, what’s the use of having a nice place you can call home?

There must be things that need doing in your house, even if it’s only occasionally. Cleaning, washing and maintenance, spring to mind, and whilst they’re mind-numbingly boring, they are tasks that still need doing.

I must admit though, to be slightly envious, because Mrs PBT’s is very much a home-loving person, whilst I am someone who likes to go off exploring, from time to time. Striking a happy balance, that pleases both partners, isn’t always easy.

Let me know when you’re planning to visit the Cardinal’s Error.

      1. It’s not a matter for agreement OR disagreement, surely ? Rather like me preferring Chinese to Indian food, or liking sour beers that Mrs RM can’t stand. It’s personal preference that most people prefer to spend most of their time indoors and some prefer to be constantly seeing new places.

  4. I passed that Bod yesterday on the X12 bus from Burton to Lichfield.
And the Matlock Bod nineteen days earlier on the TP bus from Derby to Buxton.
And I’ve not been in the Alsager Bod – but have used the other five Bods.
