CRAIG DAVID REMEMBERED AT THE FREE TRADE

June 2025. Newcastle upon Tyne.

Why does every trip to Newcastle end up as a never ending pub crawl ?

And where was the culture? I guess, the culture is in the pubs, no more so than in the Free Trade.

Blackpool Karen had been to Uni up here when Byker/Ouseburn was a no-go area, rather than the middle class enclave of book shops, petting farms and folk it is now.

If nothing else, you take visitors to the Free Trade for the view,

as it’s not the uncompromising boozer it once was.

But if the nicotine stains have gone, the beer remains,

a cool Almasty maintaining the city’s NBSS 3.5 consistency.

Come to think of it, what happened to Almasty ? Used to be ubiquitous round here.

A packed pub spilled out onto the benches, Craig David the legendary pub cat (with English Heritage listing) gets a proper memorial,

all is well with the world.

Except me. I’m a bit grumpy as I haven’t done my GBG tick in Heaton, and I attempt to match us back up the hill to Elder.

I never make it.

  1. I guess that we’re unlikely to see a Donald Trump “Man Of The People” shot at this particular pub then.

  2. Is a pubcat a different thing from a pub cat?

What does it mean when we make two words one?

(The Germans happily do it with ten, but why is perhaps best a matter for them.)

Americans do it in speech, e.g. hot milk may often become hotmilk, but then the Germans featured quite a bit in their nation building so they’re excused.

On reflection, I suppose a hair do would indeed be quite a different thing from a hairdo…
