A SUPERIOR CURRY NIGHT IN WATERBEACH

June 2025. Waterbeach.

While all is peace and quiet over in America, here in the UK there’s a heatwave that’s affecting our internet quality. That’s my only explanation for the map extract above. Note in particular the size of the telephone above the White Horse.

It’s good to celebrate excellence, and last Sunday we enjoyed excellence at our weekly Waterbeach overnighter, firstly with the best pint of Woodforde’s (Golden Delight, not Wherry) in years at The Sun,

and then a superb Nepalese curry at the refurbished (twice in 2 months) White Horse across the green.

Greene King signage,

but this is run by Lapen Inns,

and if you’ve never heard of them it’s because those pubs are largely Nepalese restaurants with a handpump.

Simple menu on one page, with most of the village attention seemingly on the price of that last beer on the list.

EIGHT QUID for Neck Oil ! You’re ‘aving a laff“.

But you don’t drink Neck Oil“.

That’s not the point !” etc etc

At the moment there’s a choice of one cask beer. Stafford Paul will have heard of it.

As someone wise once said, one beer is plenty sometimes more than enough, and this is a chewy Landlord (NBSS 3+) in a proper glass which they take some care about.

Honestly, I come to bury Waterbeach, not to praise it, but this is great grub, dhansaks and rum rums and the best peshwari naan all year.

Curry at the old Slap Up and the Taps as well, kebabs and Chinese and pizza round the Green. However did we stay so svelte ?

  1. You really can’t knock it, any more than you could The Vine in West Bromwich, or The Bartons Arms come to that.

Moving to anywhere from anywhere isn’t ever to be recommended with any confidence in my experience.

That’s just like the wonderful pub a three minute walk from me except, firstly, that the Lounge is very much a restaurant while the Bar is busy and practically unchanged from forty years ago and, secondly, it has TWO handpumps – including Doom Bar at £3.90 a pint.
