CHEESE AND BISCUITS NIGHT AT THE SUN

May 2025. Waterbeach.

Something completely different coming next, but first back to an old favourite after checking on Dad in his care home.

Shall we just check on The Sun ?” says Mrs RM, as if doing a favour for a friend. As it happens, The Sun is in good hands that Sunday, Rawtenstall Bev standing in for Tottenham (well done Spurs) Helen and the usual weekend crowd taking up position in front of the golf.

Bev may not be a beer drinker herself, but that Rossendale Valley heritage means she knows how to clean lines and pour beer,

and unnecessarily explains to Mrs RM why there’s just the two on. One is plenty…

Brakspears and Adnams are beers you’ve heard of, so we get a flash of “Coming Next”.

Oooh, Wantsum, how exciting, like being at a beer festival. The regulars are actually talking about festivals just past (Barrow Hill) and about to come (Cambridge). Without it being in any sense a “CAMRA” pubs (IFKYK) the Sun sells a higher proportion cask than any pub I know.

And it’s startlingly good tonight, the Ghost Ship (NBSS 4.5) deserving of 3 pints “to wash down the complimentary cheese and biscuits“. Well, I hope it was complimentary. Dick will know it’s dangerous to assume.

Mrs RM fills her boots, I top up my tea with those questionable Swedish “meat”balls that have been a quid since 2013,

and I wonder if I should have had that Chung Hwa crispy beef.

Too late.

    1. It won’t work for you, I always get the 20th pint pulled. Mrs RM will confirm the quality of the Adnams. When the Sun is good it’s very good (though I wasn’t that impressed by the beer fest).

      1. I had the ninth pint of Kirkstall Three Swords in the Walkley Cottage yesterday. I watched as the first eight were pulled through and thrown away. The first pint was hazy with a slight vinegary hint, the fifth was a little better, the ninth was clear and good (NBSS 3), though not chewy.

How can they make any money on cask beer?
