A FAMOUS APPLE TREE JUST OFF THE A1

May 2025. Woolsthorpe Manor. Colsterworth.

The weekly trips between Sheffield and Waterbeach get no more enjoyable in the eternal English sunshine. It’s a mental rather than physical drain, the sheer monotony of a 150 minute journey down the A1 with little prospect of a stop at Colsterworth McDonalds.

Perhaps that National Trust membership, the true mark of Old Age, will persuade us to stop at a few places to have overpriced their chocolate cake, rather than McDonalds or Greggs.

Colsterworth is your gateway to Woolsthorpe Manor, childhood home of famed apple header Isaac.

DNA may have been invented in a Cambridge pub, but gravity (etc) was invented outside this Lincolnshire farmhouse.

It’s an interesting 8 minutes finding out about Isaac’s time here.

Look ! This where the colours of the rainbow were discovered (although not actually used in Britain until 1963).

The second most famous handwritten scribbles in the world, after Will Larter’s pub notes, show how letters home to Mum were recycled to do large sums in the 17th century.

Pleasingly, there’s a section on uses of wee.

Talking of urine, I can see some problems with this outside toilet design.

The actual Gents has a display on the faking of the moon landings, which I confess I never realised Newton was part of.

Sumptuous cake in the stables, too. But next time I think I’ll plan a stop in the village pub where Mrs RM had her xxth birthday beer..

  1. This is the shittiest period of weather I remember in a long time.
The vicious blinding sun with the bitterly chilly east wind mean if you want to avoid cataracts and other horrors by sitting in the shade then you freeze.
    Roll on proper summer.

      1. I could probably have topped that, but I’m trying to cut down on ranting as it’s so much worse in the US of A, in Gaza, in Sudan. I could go on but I’ve cut down on ranting.

Did I mention I’ve been trying to cut down on ranting?
