THE SUN BEER FESTIVAL

May 2025. Waterbeach.

I can’t believe I’m spending weekends in Waterbeach, rather than Wick or Warsaw.

But that’s life, and there’s plenty of life in The Sun on their May Bank holiday beer festival weekend.

Number 14. A credit to Helen, Theresa to keep this institution going after the loss of Andrew.

Pub quizzes, live music (mostly that ’75-’79 young Matt likes,

and a chance to tick all the beers on a sheet of paper.

What sort of person ticks things ?

Ten pints is the sort of volume a Fen Edge can put back in a day, or a night and afternoon, especially if there’s a T-shirt at the end of it. Not sure if there is a T-shirt, don’t ask to see me model it.

More than anything, beer festivals are where you can guarantee to meet folk you’d otherwise only meet in the queue for Chung Hwa, like Norman,

or mysterious Untappd “friend” Matt S.

Great to meet Matt, finally. I think we agreed on the beers. A quality list, a pleasing number of stouts, but the NBSS 4 goes to the one from handpump, not barrel;

Sharp’s Sea Fury a rich, chewy joy. If only Sharp’s did a beer around the 4% mark, I’m sure that would be a winner.

And yes, the evening did end in the traditional manner…
