KEG PEDI, PROPER PUB

April 2025. Hinckley.

Back, again, through Hinckley’s pedestrianised centre to my final pub before the train home,

stopping only to note the dramatic relocation of Mr Tax.

Every trip to a UK town gives you a new perspective on the architecture,

but to really understand a place you have to visit a tax advisor there, I guess.

The GBG Queen’s Head should have given us a fifth Bass of the trip,

but it was closed till 5, so we nipped in the Black Horse next door, with its quiz night,

and darts a promise of Proper Pub.

Which it was, though sadly with cask recently taken out,

which meant Paul picked his moment to head back to the station, and us to enjoy the “best room”.

Looking forward to seeing what Pubs Galore have to say about this one, with its perfectly decent keg (not key keg) Pedi in a Thatchers glass.

A low key finale to Hinckley, missing out late openers the Queen’s Head and New Plough in favour of keg and craft, but that’s pub life.

I left Leon and Quinno to hunt out more Bass. If I’d found an parking place for my van or a bargain B & B I’d have stayed on, but 45 minutes in Leicester awaited.

Now, what to do in 45 minutes in Leicester ?

  1. I’d heard rumours of “perfectly decent keg” and only yesterday learnt that publicity for the West Midlands Regional Mild Trail, or Trial, next Saturday notes that “The Jolly Crispin in Clarence Street has Theakston Traditional Mild (keg only). It is open at 11am” and that “Gornal and Sedgley Labour Club opposite is open to non-members at 12.30pm to 4.30pm and has M&B Mild (keg only)”. Half a dozen pubs with proper Bathams, Holdens or Sarah Hughes will be plenty though at my age.
