THE WILLIAM BASS TRAIL REACHES THE PESTLE & MORTAR

You try coming up with blog titles for four successive Bass pubs.

April 2025. Hinckley.

Well, this hastily convened exploration of a rarely visited (for pubs, I’m sure folk visit for the household wares shop) Leicestershire market town was going well,

and a fourth pint of Bass in three hours came two minutes from our lunch stop, though I tried desperately to lead Leon, Paul and Quinno in the wrong direction, probably to the Wok Express.

First time at the GBG perennial Pestle & Mortar since 2017,

when local CAMRA proudly proclaimed their William Bass trail,

and my request for Bass (not sure from which of the two pumps) was met with “We do have other beers, you know“.

And they still do, and one of the most complicated beer boards in the UK,

If you see someone who chooses a half of Wherry over a pint of Bass, cross the street immediately.

Part micro, part Bass shrine,

and a cool, chewy pint to complete the quartet.

NB Always visit the toilets, folks. You never know when your next chance will present itself, and you can admire this picture of our monarch.

And wonder if this cushioned object attached to the wall has any practical purpose.
