THE NEW FACE OF HOLT BITTER

April 2025. Manchester.

On the way back from the Etihad to town after City’s unexpected comeback against Palace, Mrs RM calls me.

Fancy meeting Matt and me at a pub ?“.

Mrs RM asks the daftest questions.

I’m at the Hare and Hounds. Do you know it ? Lovely White Rat ?”

Do I know the Hare and Hounds ? In the background, Matt laughed.

They say youngsters head for the hipster places, the brewery taps, the craft bars.

But in truth it’s us old Codgers who go to Track and Fell Bar, while the kids head for Proper Pubs and £4 pints.

I’m not sure Matt is attracted to the Joey Holt pubs by the music,

but he sinks two pints of Bitter in a lovely hour spent amongst cheery groups (“All the blokes are called Terry” says Matt).

I’m sure price is a factor when drinking in Manchester, when your Guinness or keg Sonoma is £7, but both lads seem happy to choose cask, particularly when it’s as brilliantly served as in the Hare & Hounds.

Now, if I can just get him over to Sheffield to try Bass at Alder.

  1. White Rat was the other beer on in the Hare and Hounds when I was there eight days ago.
The Holts Bitter was too good for just one pint.
