YE OLDE MAN & SCYTHE

April 2025. Bolton.

Coming to the end of the Bolton crawl now; a very new one and a very old one.

The Old Man & Scythe dates back to at least 1251,

when it was first entered on the WhatPub listings.

Tucked in the cobbled street of Churchgate,

opposite the fun pubs,

it’s the heritage entry in Matthew Curtis’s Bolton chapter, but somehow almost denying its history by being very much the music pub, rather than attempting to be a Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem type diner.

Great seating, multi-roomed quirkiness, an average but bargain Bank Top.

The weakest beer of the night 3-, but not bad. And once again the GBG gets it right.

Can we have a picture of Blackpool Jane’s doggy bag obscuring those ancient windows ?” you ask.

Of course you can.
