THE BIG BOLTON BANQUET DECISION

April 2025. Mr and Mrs RM and Blackpool Jane do Bolton.

Our route back into central Bolton from Dibnah’s birthplace takes us past St Peter’s,

and into Churchgate, the start of the town’s, er, compact nightlife scene.

A glance at Ye Olde Pastie Shoppe reminds us we’re 3 pubs, if not pints, into The Medium Bolton Survey and haven’t eaten yet.

Jane and Mrs RM are in the “eat before pubs” camp, while I like to finish the night with a curry, possibly after an unfortunate beer following Masala and mango lassi incident in Bradford a decade ago.

Jane was a bit torn; curry is traditional on these days, but half a mile west stand this curiosity.

Steaks on a plane” sounds like blog gold, and if we hadn’t read the mixed reviews (or not been half a mile east) we’d have succumbed.

Instead, we found ourselves at Mr Chaat, a small South Asian place just outside the Vaults, staring at some really unusual chaats and snacks (!),

stuff I haven’t seen since the South Indian cafes of Wembley.

Fantastic and good value grub, though the Masala dosas (top) defeated Mrs RM, and Jane asked for a doggy bag.

I resisted the mango lassi with 3 pubs still to do.

  1. South Asian restaurants seem to be getting better all the time.

We’re well served here, with one in good ol’ Canton called, interestingly, Mums Daily, though I think that might be a quaint transliteration of another tongue (not Welsh.)

  2. Yeah, if I recall correctly it’s run by descendants of Greek refugees from the war.?
I went to Bolton yesterday for my first masala dosa in 12 years! I had intended to check out all the watering holes on your list, but was defeated by useless sat-nav on my iPhone. Good day out nonetheless..
