DISAPPEARING PUB LUNCHES IN SHEFFIELD

April 2025. Sheffield.

Since returning from Moldova 4 weeks ago I’ve published 65 blog posts, most of those from Wolverhampton.

Mrs RM is still working on her first one, she’s Kate Bush to my Mark E Smith. Hers is going to be great, but she needs me to GTFO the house so she can discuss things with ChatGPT.

She’s also eating healthily, so I set off into town in search of an unhealthy pub lunch to compensate.

Now, Sheffield has many great pubs, and many great unfussy restaurants, but pub lunches seem to have taken a knock recently. Proper hot lunches, anyway, you can always get a cob or pork pie.

The Fat Cat, famed for bargain pie and mash, has just stopped hot food altogether, and top Irish pub the Dog & Partridge was no longer doing their authentic Irish burgers at lunchtime.

No criticism at all; once a pub has hot food there’s always a load more staff and cost considerations,

but a pint of Guinness or Triple Point (NBSS 3.5) really needed a plate of stodge with it, rather than just scratchings.

As it was, I felt a little faint leaving the D & P for that last climb uphill into town, and was grateful for the giant food court of Cambridge Street Collective, whose pumpkin katsu (£12, top) was exactly the healthy stodge I needed.

Sheffield has almost as many of these sprawling food halls as Manchester these days, and they seem consistently busy, despite the dull beer offer.

Actually, an alpaca-themed IPA ? How did I resist ?

Mrs RM had taken the tram into town to buy fitness equipment at Decathlon, barely 10 minutes away.

Shall we meet for a pint ?”

Not sure who said that, but 8 minutes later we’re at the aforementioned Triple Point brewery,

which has a rather slim cask range but that’s OK when the keg has things called Impy Luxe and Baltic Porter, which are exactly the sort of beers for a Thursday lunchtime.

Great young staff, top soundtrack, one of the very best of the industrial estate brewery taps

I’d better eat” says Mrs RM, noticing the in-house burger bar.

We shared the chips.

  1. Crikey, Martin, 65 blog posts, in 4 weeks. Are you going for some sort of record? I’m with Mrs RM on the less is more, approach!

Sad to learn that the Fat Cat has stopped serving hot food. That bargain pie and mash I enjoyed there was excellent, but was it really almost 3 years ago?

      1. Sounds like a sensible decision Martin, although I still can’t contemplate how you keep that rate of writing/posting up, as it takes me ages just to get one article written and posted.

Good luck to you though, and all credit too, as your posts are always something to look forward to!
