MID-AFTERNOON, THE POSADA, WOLVERHAMPTON

It’s always good to report that the classic pubs are holding up well, even as cask sales decline a bit.

Last year I met the two Pauls in a couple of Black Country gems (Ma Pardoes and the Beacon)  and found them a joy, with a stop in Wolves’s Posada an unexpected bonus.

Pub a 5, beer a 3, is what I’d have said before 2024, when the HPA was notably cooler and crisper than previously

I wasn’t switching to the Bath Gem, mind,

sticking to the ubiquitous Wye Valley (3.5) as I rejoined the Pub Men.

That’s Paul Mudge signalling the Leicester CAMRA folk to put some Slade on the jukebox.

Good to see the Posada so busy on Thursday afternoon, I had to join the Leicester contingent sharing the last table in the main bar with a kindly gent who’d popped out for a quiet pint.

The Posada doesn’t really need words, but you do need to take a proper peek in the back room,

and ask yourself how Wolverhampton’s pub stock isn’t better known.

Since the cask went up a notch, I’d put this in my Top 20 pubs.

Just don’t ask how many pubs are in my Top 20.

    The Star, St Just
    The Square and Compass, Worth Matravers
    The Grill, Aberdeen
    The State Bar, Glasgow
    The Bow Bar, Edinburgh
    The Black Horse, Clapton in Gordano
    The King’s Head, Bristol
    The Agricultural, Penrith
    The Tinner’s Arms, Zennor

    3. On Martin’s blog you can have more than 10 pubs in your Top Ten, Bill. I’ve only been to half of yours – good to see that the Aggi in Penrith is open again, though I’ve not had a chance to go there since 2021.

  5. Sorry to sound a dissenting note, but for me the Posada comes in the category of “interesting historic interior, but poor actual pub operation”. The lack of a toilet seat in the gents’ (unchanged from 2023) says it all. And the clear glass in the front section makes it feel like a goldfish bowl.

    1. It had some nice points, but I tend to agree with you that it’s not one that I’ll be desperate to go back to. Which is a pity, really.

      1. I’ve just been reading previous reviews of the Old Still on Pubs Galore, having posted my own without looking at them, as is my usual habit. One begins “Holly mother of god…” and the other finishes with the line “the ghosts of past occupants must be in torment.”
        I’m sure yours will be much better.

  6. I agree with you that the beer is kept well here – my Salopian Shropshire Gold was also a 3.5 – but my heart sinks every time I see Bath Gem on a bar. And the Salopian no world beater either.

      1. Well, Shipstones wasn’t the most outstanding of beers, but was at least an anagram of Honest Piss.

        Bath Gem leaves me at a loss on the second point.

    If so that’d be because my wife is related to Noddy Holder.
    ‘Far Far Away’ was their best one.
