ROYAL OAK, WOLVERHAMPTON. A GOOD SUB FOR THE ONE WITH THE TREE IN THE GENTS

April 2025. Wolverhampton.

Just like Tiny Tim tiptoeing thru’ the tulips back whenever, our #PubMen heroes set off through the blossoms of Wolverhampton’s West Park for Pub No.2.

As I’ll never tire of telling you, Wolverhampton is a city of some beauty. Two National Trust properties, ancient churches and a pub with a tree in the Gents.

Sadly, the Combermere seemed to be closed, but we had another tree-themed back up in the Royal Oak 2 minutes west,

and I sort of wondered why this isn’t a fixture on the Wolves crawl.

Our #PubMan heroes, the ones not still heading for the Combermere, looked happy enough with proper seating and crystal clear pints.

Apart from the one who very politely enquired about CAMRA discount and got an emphatic “no”.

Having picked Holden’s over Banks’s they had Enville v Banks’s,

with me the one determined to get the Bitter while it’s still brewed in Wolves.

It tasted slightly different to the Amber in the Stile, another 3.5 but in a world without nostalgia for times passing I’d have picked the Enville.

At this point the Leicester contingent heatedly debated a sub for the Combermere, while I sought a replacement for the Combermere’s tree in the Gents.

I’m not sure Happy Garden would have appreciated me taking a leak there, but I did make a mental note to return there for a Crispy Beef.

  1. “I’m not sure Happy Garden would have appreciated me taking a leak there” – especially as it was closed and there was a plate glass window between you and their tree !
