A DASH TO BEAT LAST ORDERS AT THE ALEX

March 2025. Cambridge.

With “Sunnyside” on the market I’m looking for some budget options when I visit Dad in his care home, and as an alternative to the camper the Travelodge on Cambridge’s Newmarket Road Travelodge looks a good bet.

Free parking on Sunday, Lidl bakery for breakfast, Wrestlers over the road for your Thai or 10 minutes walk to the pubs of Mill Road.

Having spent so much of the last two years back “home” I’ve probably done these revisits to death, but as the Dobblers last year showed shouldn’t take the backstreets of Cambridge for granted.

Petersfield’s tight terraces around the rambling cemetery are urban Cambridge at its most attractive,

and though the Alexandra Arms isn’t the best looking it’s a fixture in the GBG these days.

Not a mobility scooter in sight, but parking for other essential vehicles.

Modern kitchen style” says What Pub, a small bar area leading to a giant dining area packed with Post Grads.

It’s 4:30 on Sunday, and the Alex was just about to close at the end of its renowned food service, leaving the bar free for me (note hook for man bag),

and a chap tentatively ordering a cup of Earl Grey and (small) Diet Coke over the burble of indistinct indie.

A Greene King pub but a good place for Oakham; the Inferno was cool and crisp (3.5), almost on a par with the Citra of 2019.

My notes say “eek”, but I might just have sat on my phone.

A solid beer and burger bet. I can say no more.
