DRINKING THE PREEMPTIVE DREGS IN STOCKPORT’S WHITE LION

March 2025. Stockport.

A last hurrah for Stockport on Saturday morning, when only Blackpool Jane felt up to beer. What a #Pub(Wo)man she is.

Mrs RM and I had brains that felt a bit like this last bit of art;

Not many new and shiny options for a last pub, which we’d have liked to have been this yet-to-re-open beauty;

I’m not sure I’ve ever been in the Bull’s Head.

Not sure about the White Lion, either, and frankly it looked too gorgeous to ignore on the way back to the station.

A superb refurbishment,

even if the open plan interior might not look its best at opening time.

Just admire those windows,

a cutting-edge soundtrack of Tears for Fears and the Eurythmics, and the equally cutting-edge cask.

Disappointingly, Jane swerved the Doom Bar in favour of Westwood Cheshire Cat (“Would taste better with Maltesers” say my notes)

While we nursed diet cokes, I reminded her to “save me the dregs” so I could claim the preemptive tick.

Reader, she nearly forgot completely. The dregs were OK,  and when CAMRA finally agrees on a foolproof beer scoring system to support GBG entries I’m sure “a dreg” will be an acceptable volume.

The White Lion is heavy on sports screens, but is a rambling place with some nice touches.

A bit like Manchester’s Art Gallery, which seems determined to have a longer programme of refurbishment than the City Hall,

or indeed the actual City ground.

Talking of which, the Etihad booked gorgeous that night, as we crushed mighty Plymouth.

  1. Your photos exaggerate how “modern” it is. It now offers a smart and congenial option for lunchtime pub dining in the town centre, which previously was lacking. However, the beer prices are distinctly ambitious – £5.50 for Farmers Gold is beyond the range of reasonable.

      1. Local CAMRA Pub of the Month this coming June. I doubt whether it will be Pub of the Year, though.
