CHECKING-IN AT THE PETERSGATE TAP

February 2025. Stockport.

Actually, a very long last day of February, a day that had started out all cultural before going all wobbly as Jane, Karen and Mrs RM decided that stopping at every pub in Stockport was the best idea, rather than following a curated cask exploration. Fair to say this would NOT have passed the rigorous tests applied to applications for an official CAMRA crawl.

But, heading into the town square for Foodie Friday, we finally did the stop Jane had been trying to do for ages.

I’ve always struggled to write about the Petersgate. Only last year I named it one of the half dozen best in the region and said;

It’s the micro you can enjoy between Proper Pub, the one with lovely people, live music and a choice between flat and tight head Bass.

It was packed, always is, so we had to head upstairs to the quiet room. That’s the downside.

And if only they’d get with the hip kids instead of just taunting me with this display I’d love it even more.

But you can’t argue with a friendly modern bar that brings in folk of all ages,

consistently serves NBSS 4 cask (Roosters Porter today) and top keg, and taunts Jane with a scary fridge.

“Go on, Jane, we’ll share that can of Tartarus barley wine. It’ll make a great Untappd check-in”.

“But it’s 13.2 % !!”

Mrs RM scolded me.

  1. I can’t be doing with those glasses that get narrow towards the top.
    I had water in one recently and spilt some of it down my shirt.

        I think that Dave would perhaps rather stay where he is than have a rabid mob try to torch his hotel over here?

      1. It’s an odd word.
        I’ve been to some “bars” in Scotland that were far more pubby than a lot of pubs.
        That said this place looks like a bar to me.

      2. Yes Etu, but it’s all different north of the border.
        You must remember fifty years ago nearly every pub having a wooden or quarry tile floored Bar with darts, dominoes, crib, robust language and dogs, and a carpeted Lounge with upholstered seats, red flock wallpaper and maybe meals. You’d go in the Bar on your own or the Lounge if you’d “got a bird”. Everyone was happy then but within twenty years most pubs had been knocked through into a single room which nobody really liked. And pubs have been closing ever since.

      3. Indeed Paul, so now we have far more numerous dogs all the way through, which, instead of lying silently under the table, are expected by their masters pets to sit up on the soft upholstery next to them, to be constantly fussed over and to yap if they’re not.

      1. It was a leftover from my ‘Burtons & Barley Wines’ talk and tasting, Very good it was, too (both the beer and my talk!). If there was any left, for me the real star turn was the Chiltern Brewery Bodger’s Barley Wine.
