BEWARE THE RUGBY THEMED BEERS

February 2025. Hillsborough. Sheffield.

Losing to Liverpool was inevitable, but back in Sheffield I needed immediate cheering up and that meant Sang Lung, still the only Hillsborough Chinese takeaway I’ve used.

The on-line ordering (always Crispy Beef and Singapore Rice, as am creature of habit) wasn’t working, so I had to pop in a pub while I waited, and goodness me the Queens Ground over the road looks the part.

A lovely, friendly old pub where I guess Carling beats cask 20-1, and they’ve dumped Bradfield or Barnsley on the lone pump in favour of a seasonal beer from Norfolk.

I mean, what a dreadful pump clip, for a dreadful sport. Thank goodness the rugby union season only lasts from early February to mid March, but goodness me these middle class monstrosities with their poor puns clog up the bar while the egg chasing is on.

It’s an OK pint, and well under £4, and it’s worth the visit to hear Old Boys complaining about VAR and a bit of Bowie/Queen, but I don’t sense “Tap And Go” (ugh, UGH) is a fast seller.

Lacings never lie.

    Hear, hear. Unlike the posh boys’ version of the game, I’m pretty sure I’ve never seen a rugby league themed cask beer, and long may that continue.

  2. Yes, I was disappointed with a Forwards Choice last month, only 3.4% for lower duty but Harveys can brew excellent session beers.

  4. A real pity the Queens ground has gone down hill since the change of landlord used to be a really popular well kept friendly pump with 3-4 decent cask beers on, now its worth avoiding.
