THE CROWN, GLENTHAM. YOUR CLOSEST PUB TO “THE BATTLE OF SPITAL IN THE STREET”

February 2025. Glentham.

A GBG newbie for Scunthorpe CAMRA, still in the afterglow of Sir Humphrey re-opening the Berkeley, though the causal observer may say “Surely that’s Gainsborough ?“.

Bing Maps reckons Glentham is in Market Rasen, which is Lincoln branch. Traditionally these territorial disputes are settled to see who can drink the most pints of Bateman XB in a Wolds dining pub.

The Crown in Glentham, St Peter’s it’s highest point (3 metres), is a typical Lincs diner,

giant carpark off the evocative A631,

hearty pub grub (always generous with veg up here),

the soundtrack strictly ’80s,

the bar a riot of flowers.

First in, we complimented the landlady on the flowers, and a lesser-spotted display of beer mats on the walls.

Coming next, Batemans XB“, but for now it’s Black Sheep in a Landlord glass.

It’s not a pub for the casual drinker, tables set for diners, and having poached the table by the window I see all eyes jealously looking my way.

But I’m not letting that put you off popping in for just a pint. Black Sheep, a resilient beer, is rich and chewy and my NBSS 3.5 is nearly a 4 by the end.

And if you need any more reason to visit, just east of here in Spital in the Street is the exact spot where a German motorhome stopped at Caenby Corner and, rather than going round the roundabout, reversed into my Popular Plus. We still laugh about it (not the Germans).

  1. The latest territorial dispute is allegedly between Portsmouth and Southsea.
    That’s not a proper pie.
Not in the appropriate glass but the Landlords were drinking well in my fourth nearest pub an hour ago.

  2. From where did this “Wood Burning Stove” business come?

The same place as “Male Pattern Baldness” I’d guess.

(I’m bald, and I quite like woodstoves in pubs btw)

What else is the stove likely to do with the wood? Ferment it?

      1. Yes, well, it was fried (in a pan even), before being frozen and then thawed/heated in a microwave months later…
