VAN DE GRAAF GENERATOR IN YORK’S HOUSE OF THE TREMBLING MADNESS

February 2025. York.

Monday morning in York. Almond croissant – tick. Big churchtick. Shop selling relics of famed War of the Roses protagonist Oliver Bonas,

No, give that a miss.

Mrs RM, having decided the queue in the Minster too long, needed a comfort break, and I reckoned the (original, Stonegate) House of the Trembling Madness would also meet her Insta-friendly criteria.

In 2019 I went to the second Trembling* (PG rating), but my debut at the original must have been pre-blog, which just shows how time flies.

Tucked above an astonishing offie, it may flit in and out of the Beer Guide but it’s still an essential stop for the tourist,

and the bloke who wants a pint of Azvex or Two by Two for their breakfast.

In truth, Hofbrau the pint of choice for folk who looked worryingly just like us.

Reminds me of that Ægir Brewery in Flam“, says Mrs RM, observantly.

Within 10 minutes of opening it was packed, on a day when half the country’s pubs can’t be bothered to open.

Now I know that Two by Two (favourite brewery) looks perfect murk.

In truth, and I never lie about beer quality, it’s a only a 3.

BUT. Any pub this gorgeous, with that beer list, and Van de Graaf generator albums to “entertain” and bemuse you,

is definitely getting a Top 100 place**.

  1. Love that place. Did you try the Yorkshire tapas?

They also have self-catering accommodation round the back. It’s as bizarre as everything else the do, especially the 1960’s themed apartment.
