MINING CASK GOLD IN HUTHWAITE

December 2024. Huthwaite. Notts.

This year’s Beer Guide has been packed with uncompromising new entries in unsung parts of the UK.

Yes, I like “uncompromising” as a description of villages like Huthwaite (famous son : Lee Anderson MP) in the broken heart of Notts mining land.

Unless you live there, or get horribly lost, the only folk coming to Huthwaite, or South Normanton, or Hilcote are pub tickers.

But I can’t say I left with much of an impression, bar wishing I’d tried that mysteriously named Tandoori.

The Market hasn’t left too much of an impression on my fellow tickers so far,

a plain social club turned pub without the airs and graces of big brother towns like Mansfield.

One for fans of spartan Christmas decorations, schoolchildren using the bench seats as gymnastic equipment,

and a simpler beer range.

I counted 10 pints of Carling to two of cask Lenton Lane, the one other real ale guy with hat and cane saying “It’ll do” when I asked him whether he was enjoying his pint. “It’ll do” is high praise in Ashfield.

A bit better than “It’ll do” from me, a cool, crisp NBSS 3.5 maintaining the high standard of undemonstrative new GBG entries.

Your Huthwaite soundtrack comes from Retired Martin approved US songstress Gracie Abrams;

Gracie would faint if you took her to the Market for a pint, she’s no Madonna.

    1. I’m not sure I can see the point of threatening a pub.

And what if the pub just said, “does my face look bothered?” – it would be humiliating.

      1. The last talking pub that I came across just went “ooooOOOOOOoooh” in a Graham Nortonish-sort-of way, when it overheard Mrs. E describe its décor as “something like my ex-wife would have chosen”, but it was a Brunning and Price, Will.

      2. Talking pubs are a good thing, we need more of them, Will.

The last one that I ran into just went “oooOOOoooh!” in a sort-of-Graham-Nortonish way, when it overheard Mrs. E remark on the décor’s appearing – in her opinion – to have been arranged by a footballer’s wife.

I wish that it had been a bit more expansive, but then again it was a gastropub.

I just checked on Pubs Galore and it seems that I went to Huthwaite in 2014 for some photos, did all the closed pubs plus the Woodend Inn but completely missed the Market Inn.

https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/areas/huthwaite/nottinghamshire/ (tick the closed pubs box and refresh the page).

Does this mean I’ll have to go back there? It’ll have to wait until the spring – I’ll take my bike.

    1. My oversight was because the pub had not been added to the site until earlier this year. I see from the Camra site that it used to be a club – sorry, I skimmed over that bit of your description – and its inclusion in the GBG this year is what prompted someone to add it to Pubs Galore too.
