HOUNSLOW – MOON, MARKET PLACE, CULTURAL MELTING POT

November 2024. Hounslow

Three (3) pints in new GBG London pubs, not quite BRAPA standards, but not bad for me in 2024.

Time for a curry.

I know nothing about Hounslow, but goodness me it’s multi-cultural. Think Wembley rather than Southall perhaps, all the chains are there, but I’ve rarely seen as many Asian restaurants.

Not the greatest main thoroughfare. Bit like Fareham, in fact.

and as I reached the eastern end of the High Street I’d made no decision, torn between dosas and dhansak.

And then I stumbled on the Market Place. Twenty stalls of mostly Asian food, well under a tenner, the smells converging on a packed seating area.

The guy at this place,

Hyderabadi something, was so insistent (and gave free samples) I succumbed to the £5.99 Chicken Byriani, ate on the High Street.

Honestly, people slag off British cuisine but you won’t eat better than this, and in more friendly surroundings.

Barely a white face to be seen. Ah, they’ll be in here.

And they were, plus a fair few turbans, drawn in to one of the longstanding (24 years in a row in the GBG) Moon Under Waters by £1.99 pints of Plum Porter and Abbot.

Not many Spoons vouchers being waved to bring the pints below that critical £1.50 price point.

A joyous place, quality beer (Titanic 3.5), a cultural melting pot.

Look, I’m not really making a case for Hounslow to replace Hampstead or Hackney on your London itinerary, but I can think of many, many, worse places to spend a couple of hours.

      1. Thank you for the suggestion of the app which I have just downloaded. I thought that the prices were special for Monday but they are the same today. I wonder how Wetherspoons set their prices. I am paying £2.63 in Hastings.

  1. People who have issues with English food are settling for chain style English pub food in tourist areas. If you get a lot of bad meals, you aren’t looking very well.
