WELCOME BACK TO THE WOODMAN

October 2024. Birmingham.

It wasn’t my actual reason for being in Brum on Monday night, but I’d been wanting a return to the Woodman ever since a legendary pub trip on World Cup Semi-Final Day 2018,

and not just because of the promise of a new Bass outlet.

Actual Bass, not just a Wrexham industrial estate mirror.

The Woodman always felt a bit isolated in Aston Uni land, next to that Think Tank Science Museum with its “tired exhibits”, a bit like the Fighting Cocks in Bradford or Harlequin in Sheffield,

but despite a “muted welcome” last time round I always thought it was a gem.

a true “symphony in brown”,

but the great thing is it’s busy with YOUNG folk late on a Monday night. Young folk with huge scarves.

Re-opened by a chap so keen on Bass he’s got it on two (2) different clips,

I preferred the first but got it via the second, and although it was OK (“a bit flabby” say my notes),

it was accompanied by the sound of Brum’s finest,

and I can’t ask for more than that.

  1. When you were in Highgate recently you missed out on the Winchester which since reopening in 2022 has had Bass and Harveys on permanently.

Understandably you would not have known as it is not in guide but is 3 star heritage pub with genuine Bass Mirrors.

I can understand it not getting in guide due to the Crown but not why the Wrestlers is in instead.

Incidentally when walking back from Highgate did you pass the Dukes Head which is now London`s only country music pub with a fine selection of Willie Nelson posters but no cask ale

      1. Funnily enough the pub used in the film was a now closed pub in New Cross but Simon Pegg used to drink in the Sheperds s just up the Road opposite Highgate Tube and used the name of the Winchester just down the road for the film.
Most external shots for the film were local to Highgate and Crouch End .

The Sheperds is now the Boogaloo not a real ale pub

  2. Great line up on the wickets. I wouldn’t know which Pint to start with…

Did you take a sample from the honey jars? That’s what they’re there for. A row of honey jars is like a good hanging basket.
