ALL HAIL THE STEAK AND ALE PIE IN ANTON’S GOWT

October 2024. Somewhere near Boston.

Ah, the Lincolnshire dining pub with a 1980s theme. But then it’s always the 1980s in Lincolnshire.

Let’s welcome the Malcolm Arms at Anton’s Gowt to the GBG, which are words you don’t expect to hear.

More cutting edge craft murk for the dozen diners driving out the 2 miles from Boston.

There’s a story to be written about how Tim Taylor Landlord (NBSS 3) took over the world.

It’s a plain beer range, a plain pub best seen in miniature,

with plain conversations about

relatives and retirement.

I stay for lunch, encouraged by a cheery and hardworking barmaid.

There are three (3) sorts of folk. Those who study the menu and consult their partners, those who ask for things not on the menu, and me who chooses the first thing.

Studying a menu is always an affectation, like looking at pumps.

Steak and ale pie, new pots, peas, gravy. Sounds plain ?

I kid you not, this was one of the 30 best meals of my life, the short crust pastry raising the steak to rare heights.

  1. I am drooling looking at that pie, but then I am on way back from a mini sesh in Newport having drunk just about enough not to be scared in the underpasses.

    1. I would love to be so drunk I wasn’t scared of Newport’s underpasses, Rhys. Need two pubs in Newport, including Weird Dad, so there’s hope.

Is Newport easy to get to for you ?
