September 2024. Filey.
Catching the 19:15 from Filey back to Driffield would have given us an hour to tick the GBG newbie in Bridlington, but we were in good company so stayed for a nightcap in the Star. And who knows if we’ll ever see the Southworths again if it all goes wrong (again) on November 4th.

That extra hour should have given me time to take some atmospheric pics of the sea, but it didn’t.

You know what the sea looks like, surely ?
The Star, a Guide newbie on our 2017 visit, got the short description “locals pub with cheery banter and cheap beer” last time, and I couldn’t tell you much more about it now.
Bing Maps takes you, bizarrely, to the Rugby CAMRA page,

perhaps it’s summat to do with this latest CAMRA regions fiasco. Stafford Paul will know.
Pleasant if unexceptional, more folk wearing shorts,

far too many beers (though the Boltmakers was fine), perhaps explaining why it’s lost out in the Guide to the Station,

and no-nonsense signage.

We drifted a bit, almost missing the last train back to Driffield that would allow me a nightcap there, and sadly unable to treat ourselves to cake on the platform.

I imagine the Southworths keep a stash of cake, probably milllionaire’s shortbread, in their hotel room.
Richard is the shortbread man. The Stars’ beers were all decent, but it was the people that made the pub. Extremely nice.

They were all nice people. Unfussy pubs.

Yes, I know what the sea looks like. I’m surrounded by the damn thing. I have to travel across it to get to and from work. It wouldn’t bother me if I never saw it again (fat chance)

Yes, there’s a lot resting on the shoulders of the American electorate.
Not sure what this electoral college thing is about, but it doesn’t seem very democratic in the modern world.

It isn’t. The college elects the President and its members are themselves elected by the States using varying voting systems, so it is quite possible to win without a popular majority. It was part (luckily not too much of a part) of my degree course in the 70s but no doubt a lot has changed since then.

It was part of my degree course too. Given that it’s basically a binary choice, Democrat/ Republican (other parties are available but they haven’t got a cat in hell’s chance) it would seem to make sense to just do it on the popular vote. But that would mean changing the Constitution which is virtually impossible.

They should just make our King the President. Would be easier.
