A BEER GUIDE BEANO AT THRYBERGH DEER PARK

September 2024. Thrybergh. Rotherham.

What a joy the new Beer Guide is !

Golf clubs, Sizzling pubs, revived village allrounders, brewery taps,

and now a shed on a farm next to a deer park.

Actually, not much sign of the deer park on Thrybergh’s converted farm, a theme we will see BRAPA develop later this week when I ferry him round.

I hope he nipped in the loos,

whose Beano and boyhood humour theme is a highlight of a community asset (having just walked Thrybergh).

Often, pictures do the work of 344 words.

An open plan old barn my mum would appreciate, with some beige lunches in the fridge,

and the sort of seating last seen in an upmarket Robinson’s pub in Poynton.

I’m the only customer that lunchtime, and don’t want to overdo the forced conversation with a friendly barmaid pouring an excellent Thornbridge Fonio after a vigorous pulling through.

Do you prefer cash or card ?” I always ask.

I’m easy

All pubs say this, then tut when you pay by the method they’d prefer you don’t. See : Harvey’s

Are you really ?“. I regret it as soon as the words leave my mouth. 3 days later, she will tell Simon she prefers cash, oddly.

It’s deathly quiet, and I’m relieved when she put on Sam Cooke and eventually a couple of dog walkers come in for their Carlings.

As I say, a boon for Thrybergh, a place for a good beer while your other half is buying tat from the shop across the road.

But look in vain for deer.

  1. One of the best moments of the year for someone who just goes to pubs for fun is the anguish and bitterness within the ticking crowd having “lost” several hundred valuable ticks of their ego.

I personally gained a tick with the Pele in Corbridge, but then I don’t keep count…
