THREE BLIND MICE

July 2024. Ely.

Among Ely’s many attractions for the visitor to Greater Waterbeach are a plethora of free parking options, and Mrs RM chose the option with a hedge behind for the first of two nights on Eel Island.

Three Blind Mice, crafty murk brewers from the Fens, have just taken on Ely’s first micro,

though it’s hard to see much change in the Drayman since our last visit with Kentish Paul in 2017. Even the classic rock seemed the same.

It’s cosy enough, for a micro,

and less uncomfortably busy than on previous visits (see also : Rye Waterworks), but not a place I’d linger like in the Albert.

But that’s a serious beer list. Table service (ugh) to an impatient Mrs RM,

who enjoyed the hazy Juice Rocket,

though my cask mild was a bit underwhelming.

So I don’t know what made me linger long enough for a second.

Perhaps the mixed crowd won me over,

and I was glad I stayed as the Azvex Imperial Stout we shared was, without doubt, the beer of the month.

But I’m glad we shared a third.

  1. I’m thinking of stopping off in Ely on my outward or return journey next month but if I do it won’t be for that pub.
