LILLIE ROAD

July 2024. Fulham (or is it Hammersmith).

The last of a mixed trio of London ticks, as I finally clear that awkward W6 entry by the Thames that’s been bugging me all year.

A man who is bored of visiting London pubs is a man who’s actually just tired of £7 pints” wrote Samuel Johnson, in the introduction to the first GBG.

I mean, just the names. What even are Festubert Place, Coalmaker’s Wharf and Hallsville Quarter out there in the east ? Do they only exist in the imagination of Bing Maps ?

The Overground from Brondesbury drops close (enough) to the Crabtree, an ultra-rare new entry out here by the Thames.

So I’m genuinely excited as I leave West Brompton tube and head towards the river,

so excited I almost popped back in the Lillie Langtry I’d ticked on the home strait to GBG glory in 2021.

But you’re uncomfortably close to Chelsea’s ground here, and the Lillie is a bit smart for me to do a return trip yet, so I walked up the eponymous road and wondered if I’d ever been before.

And then I jumped on a bus on its way to Hammersmith.

Well, why not ? All included in my travelcard, and I might get some edgy blog material as well as bus sickness.

I board at Fulham Pools. And get off at Fulham Pools. Six (6) minutes wasted while the driver is repeatedly told to halt while other buses catch up, or overtake. The other two passengers join me in the escape. Buses hate me. It’s mutual.

And then, having passed nothing of interest, I’m at The Wall.

Let that collection tell you all you need know about West London drinking habits.
