THE KING’S HEAD, STAMFORD

July 2024. Stamford.

The journey back from Mum’s to Sheffield is well trodden, too well trodden for much enjoyment from a 100th stop in Grantham or Newark.

But Mrs RMs Instagram post demands “content” and my tummy demands artisanal burgers beloved of Daniel Lambert, recently of Stamford.

One of these days we’ll actually do the George, rather than just admiring the sign.

And one of these days the Sam Smiths pubs will reopen.

But for now a revisit to the classy King’s Head will do,

an upmarket lunch stop for gentlefolk by day and young professionals by night,

and I’m not sure where Mrs RM fits in but she had the crafty local one,

and in the bench seats I thought “what a nice pub”.

The cask wasn’t a patch on the Citra I scored a 4 a few years back,

and the black burger and fries was magnificent but meagre.

but the young staff were marvellous, and I know I always say that. But the way they explained patiently the pub dated from 1675 while the inquisitor was actually pointing at a sign saying “King’s Head 1675” was a wonder to behold.

  1. Our favourite pub in Stamford, mainly for the Bakers Dozen beers, nice courtyard garden too which is often the only room left. We used to eat there but a change of management reduced the size of the plates significantly and all of a sudden it didn’t seem such good value. One of those very few places that went table service for everything during the lockdown era and decided to stick with it, and tbf the staff are on it with service so it works well.

    1. We had Stamford Pale and Undertow from Bakers Dozen.

Not just us who thought portions a bit miserly then.

Yes, table service not a problem in that sort of place but not my preference.

      1. You should probably have tried the Bakers Dozen Brewery Pop-Up Tap in Ketton. Only open one weekend a month in the Summer, but I think it’s in Rutland branch area so a shoe-in for GBG entry…

      2. Table service worked if you were a regular and the bar staff knew what you drank. And the pub was quiet. Otherwise it was a prize pain.

  2. I’ve still not been to Stamford, despite it having been on my to do list for about 12 years. But every time I look at the train fares I go, “How much? I could buy a 50% share of a black burger and fries (smaller portion) for that!”

Not really, of course. Besides, I’m fairly sure it wouldn’t be vegan.

  3. Dear Lord, the warmest afternoon of the year has brought them out in spades.

No, ladies, I don’t believe that you’re still young enough to be still going through the, er, “change”.

Put away those fans. And. Sit. In. The. Shade.

    There. Isn’t that better?
